Cast Iron Seats are highly collectible. Design, history, and rarity are what collectors are looking for. The history of the cast iron seat is interesting. Once farmers began to ride, instead of walk behind their farm equipment, companies came to realize the importance of the seat design. From plain wood boards in the early 1850's to solid cast iron seats in the 1860's. The first molded cast iron seats, however, had their problems. Almost all of those first seats were solid, with no holes for drainage or ventilation, forcing farmers to sit on a seat that was either hot, wet or cold. Out of necessity, a new design evolved. It wasn't long, before farm implement companies began putting in holes for the comfort of farmers. This "decorative" seat served its purpose well. Soon after, the manufacturers realized that the seat was another area where they could place the company's name, so many began designing seats with company names. The variety and beauty of these seats now make cast iron seats highly collectible.
This Antique Buckeye is a beautiful example of a cast iron tractor seat used on farm equipment including horse drawn equipment.
