Description
Bucks County Playhouse | Fine Art Photograph by Colleen Kammerer
The Bucks County Playhouse is a charming local theater. It is located on the on the banks of the Delaware River, in New Hope Pennsylvania, and sits on the site of a former grist mill. The original structure was built in 1790 after the Hope Mills burnt down. It was then named New Hope Mills which in turn led the town to change its name from Coryell's Ferry to New Hope.
Fast forward to 1930 - When the mill was facing demolition, the local community headed by a group of artists managed to save the building and renovate it into a community theater. The new playhouse opened its door in 1939. Many Broadway and Hollywood legends have grace its stage including Helen Hayes, Kitty Carlisle, George C. Scott, Shirley Booth, Lillian Gish, Jessica Tandy, June Lockhart, Grace Kelly, Leslie Nielsen, Bea Arthur, Walter Matthau, Bob Fosse, Richard Kiley, Angela Lansbury, Jack Klugman, Dick Van Dyke, Robert Redford, Bernadette Peters, Rob Reiner, Alan Alda, Tyne Daly, Mike Nichols, Liza Minnelli, John Lithgow, James Whitmore, Jessica Walter, Kevin Kline, George Segal, just to name a few!
This beloved theater was renovated in 2012 and re-opened once again on its 73rd Anniversary.
