Description
Chapel Entrance - Princeton University | Fine Art Photograph by Colleen Kammerer ~
Built in 1928- Princeton University built the chapel to replace the Marquand Chapel. The location for the new chapel was chosen for symbolic reason-- the new chapel would rise from the ashes of the old one. The chapel's Collegiate Gothic design evokes an English church of the Middle Ages. The tympanum above the main, west entrance depicts Jesus as described in the Book of Revelation, together with the four beasts and other relevant iconography. The exterior is constructed largely from Pennsylvania sandstone, with Indiana limestone used for the trim.
