The existing Route 36 Highlands Bridge over the Shrewsbury River links Sea Bright Borough and Sandy Hook on the Atlantic Ocean with Highlands Borough on the mainland. The original Highlands-Sea Bright Bridge was a 1,240-foot drawbridge, built in 1932, to connect Highlands, New Jersey in the west to Sea Bright, New Jersey in the east, across the Shrewsbury River and the entrance to Sandy Hook. The old bridge was demolished in 2008, and a new bridge was built to replace it.The new bridge is 75 ft tall and consists of two individual 1,610-foot-long spans. It was completed in the spring of 2011, just in time to brave Super Storm Sandy. For the residents of Sea Bright this bridge became a lifesaver in October 2012.As the storm surge pushed ashore, rescue teams abandoned the town and stationed themselves on the highest remaining points in the area. The second bridge, the Rumson Bridge, which spans the Shrewsbury River, was also utilized. After the storm passed, an estimated 90% of the town was said to be wiped out and uninhabitable.
