A favorite sentiment of Manasquan beach goers is emblazoned on a cement wall at Manasquan Beach, NJ. and honors its Native American roots.
Manasquan Beach is located along the Atlantic Ocean at the southern end of Monmouth County.
Native Americans, a branch of the Lenni Lenape, called the Unamis (meaning Turtle People) were the first people to live on this land. They lived off the land hunting and fishing along the rivers, inlets and stream, from the Raritan River to Barnegat Bay. Just like us, during the summer months they brought their wives and children to the Manasquan River and Beach to enjoy shellfish of the Atlantic waters. In 1887 the borough officially was named Manasquan, in honor of the Native Americans that once enjoyed this beautiful area.
The Native American word for island is man-a-tah; for wife, squaw, and for stream, han, combined -- Manatahsquawhan. Manasquan, literally meaning "stream of the island of squaws" is the English pronunciation.
