~~
First lit in 1764, the Sandy Hook Lighthouse is the oldest working lighthouse in the country. The Sandy Hook Lighthouse, in Fort Hancock, NJ, was completed in 1764 to warn incoming mariners of a low-lying sand deposit that stretches more than six miles out to sea. It has since survived lightning strikes, nor'easters, and assaults during the Revolutionary War. When it was built the lighthouse stood 500 feet from the tip of the sandy shore. Now, due to erosion and drift it stands about one and a half miles from the tip.The Sandy Hook Lighthouse was restored in Spring 2000.
Sandy Hook is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area. This area is made up of protected parks and recreation areas in New York and New Jersey. The seven mile long peninsula provides guests with both bay and ocean beaches, history, bike trails and wildlife.
