The old smoke stack and water tower sit side by side waiting to be revitalized.
As you ride along Main street in Milltown you can't help but notice the town's two iconic symbols; the water tower and smokestack. The two structures tower over the old Michelin Tire factory site.
The Michelin Tire Company was built in 1907 in Milltown, NJ. In 1930 the Michelin Tire Company closed its doors, affecting the community psychologically and financially. Milltown depended on the company for "wages, entertainment and support." During the time of the Great Depression, most of the French workers return to their homeland. The buildings were bought and sold several times, they now remain abandoned, a reminder of a once booming industry. Today this old factory waits to be redeveloped.
On Monday (8/16/16) demolition crews prepared to tear down the historic site that sits on Ford Avenue.
The town is hoping to save water tower and smokestack, as they mean a lot to the residents. For now, both structures will remain as they are not a part of the planned demolition. However their fate remains unknown as the Environmental Protection Agency wants them to come down.
