ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPH:
The carousel is an important part of American Folk Art Tradition. This Looff dragon is believed to be one of only four in the country.
The Carousel was built in 1899 for the National Export Exposition in Philadelphia. William A. Gehlhaus, the original owner of the park, paid to have it dismantled and brought by horse and wagon to Keansburg. It is housed in The Game Room arcade which is decorated with Popeye and Betty Boop, characters first popular in the late 1930s.
In recent years, this beautiful, old fashion carousel at Keansburg Amusement Park was heavily damaged after Superstorm Sandy swept across New Jersey on November 1, 2012.
Superstorm Sandy, left millions without power or water for weeks, (including me!) effected business and daily life throughout much of the eastern seaboard. I believe this carousel has once again been restored as of 2013.
