The reason I love photography is that I get to "Freeze Time," How fascinating, what power, all with the click of a button-- its magic and it is truly an honor to document how our landscapes change over time. Case in point I drove past this old farm the other day and this barn is no longer standing. Abandoned, weathered and worn, and now expired.
Manipulated photograph, finished to simulate an aged photograph in the daguerreotype process style.
The daguerreotype process was the first practicable method of obtaining permanent images with a camera. The man who gave his name to the process and perfected the method of producing direct positive images on a silver-coated copper plate was Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre, a French artist and scenic painter. The technique, announced in Paris on Aug. 19, 1839, helped kick-start photography as an art form, setting it on the road to becoming the popular, widespread medium it is today. The distinguishing visual characteristics of a daguerreotype are that the image is on a bright mirror-like surface of metallic silver and it will appear either positive or negative depending on the lighting conditions and whether a light or dark background is being reflected in the metal. The appeal of the medium lies in the "magic mirror" effect of light striking the polished silver plate and revealing a silvery image which can seem ghostly and ethereal even while being perfectly sharp. When you view an original daguerreotype up close, you will notice that the aged look is only part of the effect. Another important component is the sliver backing--making a daguerreotype wholly unlike any other photograph you've ever seen -- the effect is both subtle and almost three-dimensional. Because of that, simply aging a photo will not capture the total effect. It is suggested to achieve a decent approximation , a metallic finish paper should be used.

What a beautiful yet foreboding image. It looks like something from a Stephen King novel or movie --- a dwelling place of ghosts or zombies. I'm adding it to my list of favorites. I'm delighted to see that we share the love of nostalgia especially old barns. If you check out my Virginia gallery, you'll see one surrounded by Fall colors. I'll be back to your galleries, Colleen for more inspiration because considering your beautiful work, you are indeed an inspiration.
