Judges Shack at Island Beach. Tucked behind the hidden paths of dwarf cedars bayberry, beach palms and heather, you'll find the iconic Judges Shack standing on the edge of the sandy dunes.
History of IBSP: In 1926, Henry Phipps, a philanthropist, entrepreneur, business partner of Andrew Carnegie, and real estate investor, bought the land, which was being used primarily by local baymen and tourists. The Island Beach peninsula remained relatively untouched. Phipps died in 1930 and his heirs incorporated the area as a borough
population: 13 - which was blocked by a gate and sentry for all but the residents, who lived in leased shacks, and licensed fishermen.
In 1932, the state of New Jersey asked to purchase the land. At first the Phipps estate was not interested. But by 1950 negotiations started. The state officially acquired the land in 1953. On May 30, 1959 the park opened to visitors. 400 people paid $1.00 to explore IBSP. Today, this 10 mile stretch of preserved land hosts about a million visitors every year and has become one of the most popular beaches in NJ.
This wonderful NJ peninsula is known as “the last remaining significant stretch of natural beach and dune land in northeastern United States.”
