Description
Lion's Head Doorknocker | Fine Art Photograph by Colleen Kammerer
The door knocker has significant meaning as it is our first encounter with the building we are about to enter. The main function of the door knocker came about because there were no bells in early days therefore, the door knocker allowed the guest to announce his arrival; it symbolized welcome. Likewise, during the superstitious Middle Ages, door knockers took on gruesome faces, such as gargoyles, dogs and lions, to ward off evil spirits from entering the home.
"If one does not do evil things in the daytime, one need not fear knocks on the door in the middle of the night."
"Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you."
