Nautilus - from the Latin form of the original Greek "sailor"
Image reveals the inner chambers of a Nautilus Seashell. The Nautilus is found in the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific Ocean. Its most familiar characteristic is its smooth, coiled shell, up to 11 inches in diameter. The shell is lined with mother-of-pearl and is separated into a series of progressively larger compartments; the most recent of which is inhabited by the animal. Having survived relatively unchanged for millions of years, nautiluses are often considered "living fossils."
