~~
A stark image of one of the cottages before the summer tenting. Canvas tents are attached to wooden cottages at Ocean Grove Tent City. The cottage is used as bedroom/kitchen, while the tent area is the living room. The tents are put up in May and taken down in September; the wooden cottages stay up year round.
When you think of Ocean Grove, you usually think of the beautiful Victorian architecture, its collection of quaint shops, and the Great Auditorium alive with music.
But there's another wonderful element to Ocean Grove ...The tent community, which arrived before the Great Auditorium, cottages sit side by side creating a ring around the Great Auditorium.
Tent City -started in 1870. In the summer months tenting is still a way of life in Ocean Grove, NJ. At one time there were 200 tents for every home. Today, 114 tent structures still nestle around the Great Auditorium which is the hub of the summer activities and where descendants of founding families continue to carry on this wonderful tradition.
