~~
A giant sand dune sits isolated at Island Beach; forming a majestic focal point against the blue sky and ocean. On this particular day, clouds seem to be spewing out of the top like a volcano.
Beach dunes are formed by sand that is blown to the back edge of the beach. Dune building is a gradual process and plants play an important role in dune formation. Roots stabilize the dune and above ground plant structures intercept and trap more sand.
"Island Beach has 10 miles of coastal dunes which remain almost untouched since Henry Hudson first described New Jersey's coast from the ship, the Half Moon, in 1609."
