~~
The steam power plant was built in 1930, it provided heat to all of the buildings on the boardwalk, in order to provide heat to boardwalk attractions so that Asbury Park could compete year-round for recreational business. It delivered heat via a concrete steam tunnel. The bronze urn is where excess steam was released from the machinery.
It was designed by Warren and Wetmore from New York City who were responsible for other Beaux Arts structures nearby, including the Casino, Convention Hall, Paramount Theatre, and the Berkeley Carteret Hotel to the north. The Steam Plant was constructed with attention to detail, and an eye towards design that one rarely finds in utility buildings these days
