Hand carved carousel horses at Casino Pier in Seaside Heights.

In the Victorian era, the horses were painted in natural colors to look like real animals. But with heavy use and the need to attract customers, they had to be frequently repainted. To make the horse functional and pretty to attract a rider, horses would often be repaint in colors like pink, green or blue. Some carousel horses could have up to 20 layers of paint! Colors could vary as some owners used whatever leftover paint they had.
