Description
Hamilton Jewelers - Princeton
The Hamilton Jewelers Building sits right across from the Princeton University gates on the corner of Nassau Street. This iconic building was built in 1898. The Lower Pyne Building in Princeton, is an elaborate example of the Tudor Style, a revival style commonly used in the United States between 1890 and 1940. Though the name Tudor Style may be historically imprecise, since relatively few examples closely mimic the architectural characteristics of Tudor (early 16th-century) England. Instead, the style is loosely based on a variety of late Medieval English prototypes, ranging from thatch-roofed folk cottages to grand manor houses. The most obvious characteristic of Tudor Style is decorative half-timbering , very elaborate in the case of Lower Pyne Building. Other traits include a steeply pitched roof; cross gables; tall, narrow windows with multi-pane glazing; and massive chimneys commonly crowned by decorative chimney pots.
