A great reminder of just how important the small town of Milltown was back in the day, is the Raritan River Railroad Freight Station. This freight station was built in the early 1900's. It closed in 1980. However, during its heyday, The Milltown Station was a bustling place. The Milltown station was important because it had the ability to deliver, through the Railway Express agent, High Priority packages. Soon, more and more industries and people moved into the small town, and Milltown began to grow.
The busiest period for the freight station was during World War I, twenty-two passenger trains were running through Milltown per day! That meant nearly 9000 passengers per day were moved on the little Raritan River Railroad. Hundreds of people per day would board trains in Milltown as their daily way of life.
When the Depression hit in 1930 the Freight Station, and the booming town of Milltown fell on hard times. Now only four trains would run daily through Milltown, a huge drop from the twenty-two! With the progress of buses, cars , and the NJ Turnpike, the Raritan River Railroad Freight Station, continued its decline and never recovered.
Milltown (New Jersey) is now in the process of raising funds to preserve it as a museum. As for now it sits boarded up, awaiting its fate.
